Portugal's €20 Green Rail Pass: Where It Works

Regional journeys need no reservation. Intercidades journeys require a booked second-class seat, and Alfa Pendular is excluded.

Portugal’s Passe Ferroviário Verde, or Green Rail Pass, costs €20 for 30 consecutive days. It covers the CP services in the table below, with reservations required on Intercidades.

Which trains does the pass cover?

Regional and InterRegional services are included without a seat reservation. Intercidades requires a free second-class reservation, while Alfa Pendular needs a separate ticket.

What about Lisbon and Porto urban trains?

The cabinet approved an expansion to Lisbon and Porto urban trains on 17 September 2026, but gave no start date. CP’s current pass conditions still cover only the outer sections listed below. For a journey within the excluded metropolitan sections, buy the usual local ticket or pass.

In Lisbon, the included section runs between Carregado and Azambuja. Around Porto, it covers Vila das Aves–Guimarães, Paredes–Marco de Canaveses, Paramos–Aveiro and Lousado–Braga. Carry the purchase receipt on those Porto services, as CP requires it during inspection.

Fertagus was announced as a later extension and is not included in the current pass. Metro, bus and ferry journeys also need their own tickets or an intermodal pass such as Navegante or Andante. Coimbra’s CP urban category is included, but Metro Mondego is a separate operator.

Does the €20 pass cover my journey?

For a journey with connections, check each train separately.

How do Intercidades reservations work?

For Intercidades, reserve a second-class seat at no charge. The pass allows up to two distinct Intercidades journeys a day, subject to seats being available.

The booking window opens within 24 hours before the train departs from its starting station. That can be earlier than 24 hours before your boarding time.

You can cancel up to 15 minutes before departure from the boarding station shown on your reservation. Cancelling frees that journey from your daily allowance. To change the day or time, cancel and book again.

To reserve online, open CP’s booking system and select your journey.

  1. Choose the Green Rail Pass option and request a second-class seat.

  2. Enter the CP card details and check the boarding station.

  3. Save the reservation alongside the valid pass for inspection.

Who can buy it, and for how long?

CP also sells 60 days for €40 and 90 days for €60. You choose the start date when loading the pass. Its validity runs from that date, across calendar months.

The personal CP card is available to Portuguese citizens and foreign residents in Portugal. There is no upper age limit for the pass. A parent or legal representative applies for a minor under the card’s terms.

How do you get a CP card and use it afterwards?

A digital-only CP card costs €0.50 and supports the Green Rail Pass. A physical card with its digital version costs €6, plus €2.50 if posted. CP quotes up to 10 working days for the physical card. These card charges are separate from the pass.

Apply through CP’s customer area with Chave Móvel Digital, Portugal’s digital identity service, or visit a ticket office with the documents below. The digital-only application at a counter requires a Portuguese Citizen Card. Foreign residents without one can ask the counter about a physical card and the residence evidence it accepts.

Use the same email address for the card request and your myCP account so the digital card appears in the app. You can load the pass in the CP app, on cp.pt or at a ticket office. During the journey, you must be able to show the valid card and photo identification.

The gov.pt app has also supported the pass since 9 June 2026. Add it to the digital wallet by signing in with Chave Móvel Digital.

  • Official photo identification.
  • The residence card or accepted residence proof applicable to a foreign resident.
  • The recent passport-style photograph required for the counter application.
