Accessible Beaches in Portugal: Can You Reach the Water?
Ramps and adapted toilets help you reach and use the beach. Getting into the water may also require an amphibious chair and bathing assistance.
Some Portuguese beaches have amphibious chairs and staff who help visitors enter the water. Others provide an accessible route and facilities without a bathing service. The Praia Acessível award identifies beaches meeting the programme’s access requirements, but you still need to arrange any water-entry assistance with the local team.
What does the accessible-beach award require?
Praia Acessível means “accessible beach”. The programme requires a continuous, firm route from the public road towards the water, reserved parking connected to that route, adapted toilets and first-aid facilities, and lifeguard provision during the bathing season. The route must reach as close to the water as practicable.
For 2026, IDiPD, the public institute responsible for disability and inclusion, lists 239 awarded beaches. Of these, 179 are coastal and 60 are inland. It reports bathing equipment at 214 and assisted bathing at 149. Those are separate measures.
Where is help entering the water confirmed?
Cascais publishes individual access declarations for Conceição, Tamariz and Carcavelos. Conceição and Tamariz explicitly identify adapted toilets, ramps and amphibious chairs. The Carcavelos declaration locates toilets by the accessible parking and concessions, but does not specify every toilet’s adaptation.
Cascais’s Maré Viva bathing assistance ran daily from 09:00 to 19:00 between 15 June and 12 September 2026. That season has ended. Contact mare.viva@cm-cascais.pt to ask about future sessions and arrange the assistance you need.
Portimão announces monitored bathing with Tiralô chairs at Vau and Alvor from July to September, daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Its notice also lists two amphibious chairs and an access mat at Praia da Rocha. It does not confirm the same staffed service there.

How should you use the directory?
The directory starts with beaches marked accessible in APA’s public access-point inventory. That inventory currently contains more entries than the programme’s annual award list, so its flags must not be read as 252 current awards. Different parts of one beach can have separate records.
Municipal information supplies the extra filters for wheelchair routes, adapted toilets and assisted water entry. Fields marked “not verified” still need a local answer. At Carcavelos and Alvor, ask which entrance and bathing point to use, because the facilities serve a particular part of the beach.
What should you ask before setting out?
Tell the operator what assistance you need, then establish the practical arrangements.
- Is the complete route usable with my chair, including the last section over sand?
- Who assists the transfer, and can they provide the support I need?
- Must I reserve the chair or a bathing time?
- Which toilet and changing facilities are adapted, and are they open during my visit?
- Where should the driver stop, and what happens if sea conditions prevent bathing?
