Caves in Portugal You Can Actually Visit

Limestone chambers on the mainland and lava caves in the Azores welcome visitors on guided tours, with very different conditions underfoot.

Mira de Aire and Grutas da Moeda run regular limestone-cave visits. In the Azores, Algar do Carvão and Gruta das Torres have reopened with restrictions, and Gruta do Carvão runs guided tours. São Vicente in Madeira remains marked closed by the official tourism body.

Which recent changes affect a visit?

Algar do Carvão reopened on 21 March 2026 while its new visitor centre is being built. The temporary arrangements lack toilets, a bar and a sheltered waiting area. Works can affect access, so its construction notice matters as much as the timetable.

Gruta das Torres resumed descents on 19 July 2026 with long and short visits. Online ticketing is temporarily unavailable while the operator adapts to the two formats, so contact the visitor centre to arrange a time.

Does an accessible entrance mean an accessible cave?

An exit lift does not remove stairs elsewhere on a route. At Mira de Aire, visitors descend on foot before using the lift to leave. At Algar do Carvão, the operator explicitly states there are no ramps or lifts for visitors with reduced mobility.

Moeda offers a different possibility. Its team can arrange a Joelette, an assisted all-terrain chair, subject to advance booking and availability. This is not ordinary independent wheelchair access. Discuss transfers, support and the route directly with the operator.

What about Escoural and São Vicente?

Escoural’s archaeological cave admits groups of up to ten by advance booking. Património Cultural lists tours Tuesday to Saturday at 10:30 and 14:30, booked at least 48 hours ahead on +351 266 857 000. When booking, ask about the price and your group’s access needs. The official listing gives no current price, stair count, temperature or photography policy.

São Vicente in Madeira remains closed, according to Visit Madeira. It is therefore left out of the visitor finder.

How reliable is the opening filter?

“Scheduled open now” compares the published timetable with the local time in mainland Portugal or the Azores. It cannot confirm spare tickets, weather closures or changes made after the source check. For a timed visit, book the departure itself.

Where a card has no verified stair count or access description, ask the operator about the route before booking. For any visit, wear shoes suited to damp, uneven ground.
